Director
Lead through managers, design a multi-team operating system, and allocate scarce attention with business judgment.
Editorially reviewed
A director’s unit of work is the system around several teams. The role is not to become a more senior problem solver for every manager. It is to create the conditions in which managers can own outcomes, coordinate across boundaries, surface risk, develop other leaders, and make sound decisions without waiting for you.
Use this route to examine that operating system from the inside out. Begin with the contract between you and your managers, then work through leadership depth, organization design, decision rights, operating cadence, strategy, communication, finance, and portfolio choices. Practice with one live part of the organization at a time and look for evidence that the system works when you are not in the room.
